(March 28, 1997)
Product Description
In recent years, the Scandinavian Defense (1 c4 d5) has become increasingly popular both at club and grandmaster level. Indeed, it was even used by Viswanathan Anand in his World Championship match against Garry Kasparov! In this book for club and tournament players, Grandmaster John Emms explains the strategy and tactics of this dynamic and fashionable opening. Through the use of model games for both sides, the author provides a thorough grounding in the key ideas so players can quickly and confidently start to use the Scandinavian in their own games.

Product Description
62 brilliant games involving the best players in the world, with notes by one of the top annotators.
Igor Stohl has selected 62 outstanding games from recent years and analysed them in painstaking depth. Here he presents his findings to chess enthusiasts, who will find the games entertaining and the annotations both instructive and illuminating. Stohl is an outstanding theoretical expert, so the opening phase of each game reads like a lesson in the key strategic aspects of the opening chosen, with a critical survey of modern trends. The middlegame is dissected and the critical decisions subjected to keen scrutiny - we are invited inside Stohl's laboratory to join him in the quest for the truth. The endgame phase, if reached, is handled with similar erudition, with insights into the grandmaster's approach to questions of technique. Following each game there is a discussion of the most important lessons to be learned.
The expanded and revised new edition of this award-winning work features 12 new top-level games from the period 2000-2007 annotated in great depth - about 15% new material. There are also corrections to the existing notes and a revised Introduction.

The Najdorf is one of the most sharp, dynamic, and popular openings that Black can play and is a firm favorite amongst the world's elite players, including world number one Garry Kasparov.
From the Back Cover
The Najdorf Sicilian is one of the most sharp, dynamic and popular openings that Black can play and is a firm favorite amongst the world’s elite players, including world number one Garry Kasparov. From very early on, Black unbalances the game to a reach a position in which one can play for the win without exceptional risk.
The soundness of the Najdorf has never been seriously doubted, but some players can be put off by the ever-spiraling amount of theory amassed on this great opening. In Play the Najdorf: Scheveningen Style, however, Grandmaster and openings expert John Emms condenses this mountain to produce a workable black repertoire against all of White’s possible options. Emms concentrates on lines where Black adopts a very early ..e7-e6, thus establishing the well-known Scheveningen pawn structure.
Play the Najdorf explains an opening championed by Garry Kasparov; is written by a renowned openings theoretician; covers all of White’s main replies.

Starting Out: Queen's Gambit Declined by Neil McDonald

http://rapidshare.com/files/149360719/McDonald_Neil_-_Starting_Out_-_Queen_s_Gambit_Declined.djvu
Review: There aren't that many books on the QGD -- Marovic and Polugayevsky are the only authors that come to mind off the top of my head, and they're both somewhat dated. So there's definitely a niche for a book on the subject. The book under review is a godsend for a 1.d4 player like myself who wants a clear explanation of ideas. For instance, in the classical set-up (...c6, ...Nbd7, ...Be7), what does one aim for in the tabiya position that arises after 12....e5?
The book, as the author makes clear, doesn't cover every main line: it restricts itself to the Tartakower, the Lasker, the Exchange, the Classical, the Cambridge Springs, and the Bf4 lines. The author explains the ideas in each of these lines using games from both past and present. Every class player who plays or encounters the QGD will benefit from this, and even experts may pick up a few things.
In my humble opinion, mastery of QGD and QGA postions is essential for every chessplayer, regardless of whether he plays them or not.To this extent, the book belongs on every player's shelf.

Nimzo-Indian Rubinstein: The Main Lines with 4e3 by Angus Dunnington (2003)

http://rapidshare.com/files/156975102/Angus_Dunnington_-_The_Nimzo-Indian_Rubinstein__2003_.pdf | 13355 KB

Product Description
The Nimzo-Indian Defence continues to be one of Black’s most popular and respected defences to queen’s pawn openings, and finding an antidote for White has proved to be a difficult task for even the strongest players in the world. One of the most straight-forward replies is the Rubenstein Variation (4 e3), in which White ignores Black’s ‘threats’ and instead simply gets on with the process of developing his remaining pieces. This plan has found favor with many top players; indeed, Brain Games World Champion Vladimir Kramnik used it to defeat Garry Kasparov in just 25 moves in their 2000 match in London.
In this book, renowned openings theoretician Angus Dunnington explains the ideas and strategies for both white and black players. All the major variations are covered and readers are brought up-to-date with the constantly increasing opening theory.

*Written by a leading openings expert
*Full coverage of all the major variations
*Deals with one of the most fashionable lines of the Nimzo

Chess Success: Planning After the Opening (Batsford Chess Books) by Neil McDonald (2007)

http://rapidshare.com/files/157510213/McDonald__Neil_-_Chess_success-planning_after_the_opening__Bastford_2007_.pdf | 12155 KB

Product Description

It’s a fact that you can win some chess games just by playing one solid-looking move after another. But at the higher levels of competition, it’s not enough to play move by move: you need a plan. Chess Success is about making that plan. It shows, with fascinating examples taken from actual grandmaster games, why the solid-looking move—the “natural” move—can often be a subtle blunder. Learn to make a better move by first looking at the pawn structure of the game and understand how it’s “warped” by the positions of the pieces. Apart from this powerful new way of looking at chess strategy, the games with their unexpected twists are tremendously entertaining to replay.

Product Description
‘Chess is 99% tactics’ is an old saying. This may be an exaggeration, but even the remaining 1% still depends on tactics. When Martin Weteschnik started working as a trainer in his local chess club, he quickly realized that even the stronger club players had great weaknesses in their tactical play. He also discovered that simply asking them to solve a huge number of puzzles did not fix the problem. These players clearly needed a good book, but when Weteschnik looked for it he found nothing suitable, so he decided to write it himself. But Weteschnik was not completely satisfied with the book and decided to restructure and rewrite it completely.

About the Author
Martin Weteschnik is a German chess master with years of experience in helping club players improve their play.
