The middlegame is dissected and the critical decisions subjected to keen scrutiny - we are invited inside Stohl's laboratory to join him in the quest for the truth. The endgame phase, if reached, is handled with similar erudition, with insights into the grandmaster's approach to questions of technique. Following each game there is a discussion of the most important lessons to be learned.
The expanded and revised new edition of this award-winning work features 12 new top-level games from the period 2000-2007 annotated in great depth - about 15% new material. There are also corrections to the existing notes and a revised Introduction.

The Najdorf is one of the most sharp, dynamic, and popular openings that Black can play and is a firm favorite amongst the world's elite players, including world number one Garry Kasparov.
From the Back Cover
The Najdorf Sicilian is one of the most sharp, dynamic and popular openings that Black can play and is a firm favorite amongst the world’s elite players, including world number one Garry Kasparov. From very early on, Black unbalances the game to a reach a position in which one can play for the win without exceptional risk.
The soundness of the Najdorf has never been seriously doubted, but some players can be put off by the ever-spiraling amount of theory amassed on this great opening. In Play the Najdorf: Scheveningen Style, however, Grandmaster and openings expert John Emms condenses this mountain to produce a workable black repertoire against all of White’s possible options. Emms concentrates on lines where Black adopts a very early ..e7-e6, thus establishing the well-known Scheveningen pawn structure.
Play the Najdorf explains an opening championed by Garry Kasparov; is written by a renowned openings theoretician; covers all of White’s main replies.

Starting Out: Queen's Gambit Declined by Neil McDonald

http://rapidshare.com/files/149360719/McDonald_Neil_-_Starting_Out_-_Queen_s_Gambit_Declined.djvu
Review: There aren't that many books on the QGD -- Marovic and Polugayevsky are the only authors that come to mind off the top of my head, and they're both somewhat dated. So there's definitely a niche for a book on the subject. The book under review is a godsend for a 1.d4 player like myself who wants a clear explanation of ideas. For instance, in the classical set-up (...c6, ...Nbd7, ...Be7), what does one aim for in the tabiya position that arises after 12....e5?
The book, as the author makes clear, doesn't cover every main line: it restricts itself to the Tartakower, the Lasker, the Exchange, the Classical, the Cambridge Springs, and the Bf4 lines. The author explains the ideas in each of these lines using games from both past and present. Every class player who plays or encounters the QGD will benefit from this, and even experts may pick up a few things.
In my humble opinion, mastery of QGD and QGA postions is essential for every chessplayer, regardless of whether he plays them or not.To this extent, the book belongs on every player's shelf.

The Benko Gambit by Jan Pinski (Nov 30, 2005)

Product Description
The Benko Gambit is one of the most dynamic defences for Black against 1.d4 and is favoured by world class players such as Veselin Topalov and Alexander Khalifman, both of whom have used this defence to score memorable victories. The dynamic counterplay Black receives in return for the sacrificed queenside pawn gives Black compensation, often lasting all the way into the endgame. In this entertaining and instructive book, renowned theoretician Jan Pinski clearly identifies the critical lines every player needs to know in order to play this opening, and clearly explains the core ideas of the opening. Besides being completely up-to-date and thoroughly researched, the book also contains a large amount of new analysis, including in the currently popular Epishin variation.

From the Back Cover
The Italian Game (sometimes referred to as the Giuoco Piano) is one of the oldest openings around, and also one of the first lines a player learns when he or she is introduced to chess. It leads to play that is easy to understand: both sides develop their pieces logically and begin attacks on the opposing kings. The Italian Game gives both White and Black the opportunity to play either aggressively and in gambit fashion, or in a restrained and positional manner. One of White's most exciting and attacking options is the legendary Evans Gambit, which has been brought back into the limelight in this modern era by such uncompromising players as World number one Garry Kasparov, Alexander Morozevich, and England's Nigel Short.

Product Description
Computers have permeated almost every facet of modern chess, yet few players know how to gain the maximum benefit from working with them. Computers function as playing partners, opening study tools, endgame 'oracles', tactics trainers, sources of information on opponents and searchable game databases. Kongsted provides practical advice on how to use computers in all these ways and more. He also takes a look at the history of the chess computer, and how its 'thinking' methods have developed since the early days. The book features an investigation of human vs. machine contests, including the recent Kasparov vs. Deep Junior and Kramnik vs. Deep Fritz matches, in which honours ended even.
About the Author
Christian Kongsted trained as a journalist at the Danish School of Journalism, and is an experienced chess writer. His correspondence chess rating is over 2500, and his Elo rating is over 2200. He has been interested in computer chess ever since he got his first chess computer at the age of eight. See also Beat the Grandmasters.

Understanding the Leningrad Dutch by Valeri Beim (December 2002)

http://ifolder.ru/4031050
(3528 KB)
Product Description
The Leningrad System of the Dutch Defense is an interesting hybrid of the Dutch and the King's Indian. For many years, it was viewed with some suspicion in view of the slight positional weaknesses created in Black's position. However, in the 1980s dynamic new approaches were introduced by such players as Sergei Dolmatov, Evgeny Bareev, Mikhail Gurevich and especially Vladimir Malaniuk. These players showed how an active approach could compensate for these defects, and offer Black excellent winning chances. Since then, the Leningrad has been a popular and effective opening choice for players of all levels.
A good understanding of the themes of the Leningrad is at least as important as detailed knowledge of its theory. Valeri Beim has a wealth of experience with the Leningrad Dutch and is an accomplished trainer, so is ideally qualified to guide the reader through the twists and turns of this remarkable opening.

About the Author
Valeri Beim is a grandmaster who lives in Austria. He has won numerous tournaments and plays in the Austrian and German leagues. For many years, he was the head trainer at the chess school in Odessa (Ukraine) and he was also the trainer of the Israeli olympiad team. This is his second chess book.

From the Back Cover
From relative obscurity to one of White's favourite queen's pawn openings, the rise in popularity of the Trompowsky Attack over the last decade or so has been quite staggering. Largely inspired by a group of English players headed by Julian Hodgson and Michael Adams, the 'Tromp' has been enthusiastically taken up by club players and Grandmasters alike. Even the World number one Garry Kasparov has tried his hand at this dynamic opening.
The Trompowsky is an ideal weapon for club and tournament players. From as early as move two White stamps his authority on the game and gives Black difficult problems to solve. While it's true that the opening has now built up a reasonable amount of theory, there is relatively little to learn compared to more mainstream openings and still much scope for original play.
In this book Grandmaster Nigel Davies presents the reader with up-to-date coverage of this ever-expanding opening. Using model games for both White and Black, he studies the key strategies and tactics associated with the Trompowsky.

*Written by an expert on the Trompowsky
*Ideal for club and tournament players
*All main lines are covered
*Provides everything you need to know to play the opening with confidence

Moskalenko, Victor - The Fabulous Budapest Gambit (2007).

My first experience with the Budapest Gambit was a thin, pale gray pamphlet that carried pages of moves followed by cryptic evaluations. Oh yes, there were a few complete games included; yet, to gain a better understanding, we would scour the available chess literature for any games in print. It was a time when Bisguier or Ljubojevic would essay the Budapest as a winning attempt. How times have changed. As I write this, there is news that Mamedyarov used the Budapest to draw no less a name than Kramnik. For me it was all the more joyous, as I had recently finished reading The Fabulous Budapest Gambit by Victor Moskalenko and once again felt the tugging of the Black e-pawn to bypass e6 on its way up the board.

When I found out that a new book on the Budapest was coming out, my ears perked up. Curiosity followed when I found out the book would be written by a GM. Though the defense has been played by a number of GM's in the last three decades, I thought it was still on the "play only in case of emergency" list. I had played the Budapest for a few years and found that it was a lot of fun, but not anything to build a repertoire around. So I looked forward to seeing the book.

Josh Waitzkin, «The Art of Learning: A Journey in the Pursuit of Excellence»

Free Press | ISBN 0743277457 | Password: polite786 | PDF | 27,5 Mb (Uncompressed)

Description:
Josh Waitzkin knows what it means to be at the top of his game. A public figure since winning his first National Chess Championship at the age of nine, Waitzkin was catapulted into a media whirlwind as a teenager when his father's book Searching for Bobby Fischer was made into a major motion picture. After dominating the scholastic chess world for ten years, Waitzkin expanded his horizons, taking on the martial art Tai Chi Chuan and ultimately earning the title of World Champion. How was he able to reach the pinnacle of two disciplines that on the surface seem so different? "I've come to realize that what I am best at is not Tai Chi, and it is not chess," he says. "What I am best at is the art of learning."
In his riveting new book, The Art of Learning, Waitzkin tells his remarkable story of personal achievement and shares the principles of learning and performance that have propelled him to the top -- twice.
With a narrative that combines heart-stopping martial arts wars and tense chess face-offs with life lessons that speak to all of us, The Art of Learning takes readers through Waitzkin's unique journey to excellence. He explains in clear detail how a well-thought-out, principled approach to learning is what separates success from failure. Waitzkin believes that achievement, even at the championship level, is a function of a lifestyle that fuels a creative, resilient growth process. Rather than focusing on climactic wins, Waitzkin reveals the inner workings of his everyday method, from systematically triggering intuitive breakthroughs, to honing techniques into states of remarkable potency, to mastering the art of performance psychology.
Through his own example, Waitzkin explains how to embrace defeat and make mistakes work for you. Does your opponent make you angry? Waitzkin describes how to channel emotions into creative fuel. As he explains it, obstacles are not obstacles but challenges to overcome, to spur the growth process by turning weaknesses into strengths. He illustrates the exact routines that he has used in all of his competitions, whether mental or physical, so that you too can achieve your peak performance zone in any competitive or professional circumstance.
In stories ranging from his early years taking on chess hustlers as a seven year old in New York City's Washington Square Park, to dealing with the pressures of having a film made about his life, to International Chess Championships in India, Hungary, and Brazil, to gripping battles against powerhouse fighters in Taiwan in the Push Hands World Championships, The Art of Learning encapsulates an extraordinary competitor's life lessons in a page-turning narrative.

Improve Your Attacking Chess by Simon Williams (Sep 2004)

Gambit Publications | 2004-09 | ISBN:1904600093 | 160 pages | PDF | 6 MB

Product Description
Checkmating the enemy king is the ultimate goal in chess. In this book Simon Williams helps readers to practice and improve their skills in this vital area of practical chess. A mating attack typically involves a build-up of forces, followed by an opening of lines, often involving a sacrifice. Once the enemy king is exposed, it is either checkmated, or only saved at a great cost in material. The puzzles in this book are pertinent to all these phases, and involve questions of where to attack and what pieces to use. Topics include: Attacking the king caught in the centre; Central breakthrough; Standard sacrifices against the castled king; Chasing the king; Endgame mates; Combinative themes.

Chess Strategy in Action by John Watson (Aug 2003)

Publisher: Gambit Publications | Pages: 287 | 2003-08 | ISBN 1901983692 | PDF | 20 MB

Product Description
John Watson fleshes out the theory presented to enormous acclaim in Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy and extends it into new areas. He illustrates the modern practice of chess with many examples from imaginative players such as Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Ivanchuk and tempestuous innovators such as Shirov and Morozevich. In Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy, Watson broke new ground by describing the developments in chess strategy since the time of Nimzowitsch. He explained how modern players are more willing than their predecessors to favour dynamic considerations over static ones, and how they have increasingly transcended the limiting 'rules' which influenced play in earlier times. The dominant results of Garry Kasparov and the rise of a new generation of supergrandmasters testify to the effectiveness of this dynamic and open-minded philosophy which has enriched modern chess. Those who enjoyed Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy will welcome the clarification of important concepts. Chess Strategy in Action can also be read on its own as an outstanding collection of modern games with thoughtful and enlightening annotations.

How to Calculate Chess Tactics by Valeri Beim (August 30, 2006)

Publisher: Gambit Publications | Pages: 176 pages | 2006-08 | djvu | 6.51 MB

Product Description
Thinking methods are at the heart of the chess struggle, yet most players devote little conscious effort to improving their calculating ability. Much of the previous literature on the subject has presented idealized models that have limited relevance to the hurly-burly of practical chess, or else provide little more than ad hoc suggestions. Here, experienced trainer Valeri Beim strikes a balance by explaining how to use intuition and logic together to solve tactical problems in a methodical way. He also offers advice on when it is best to calculate ‘like a machine', and when it is better to rely on intuitive assessment.

Collection of the awarded games from chess tournaments and matches since 1876 till 1995. The major part of these 1640 games annotated by the authors.
The authors believe chess to be a wide sphere of human culture and art. Combinations, the most artistic elements of chess, attract both an amateur and a profy.
The book is an attempt to gather chess games that've been awarded with various prizes. The authors' aim was not to supply the games with exhausting analysis, only the most important and beautiful ideas are reflected in their notes. The games ordered chronologically.
These games help to realize how the idea of beauty in chess has been changing in the course of history of official competitions.
The book helpful for those who want to learn more about chess theory and avoid early falls in their games.
